Our mission to grow our own meals was inspired by an unbelievable San Diego resource (and all-around great guy) affectionately known as “Farmer Bill” at City Farmers Nursery. Bill Tall founded the family owned, organic garden supply nursery, just outside of downtown San Diego, in 1972. It is such a fun place to spend an afternoon even if you don’t need any supplies.
Three weeks ago, Drew and I decided we were going to start an organic garden. And since neither of us has ever really grown anything (edible), we started attending the free gardening classes at City Farmers. Bill’s passion for gardening organically and living sustainably is contagious. For the first time, I realized how far we’d strayed from the good old fashioned ideals of eating locally and in season. Bill’s able to live off of what he grows (and a weekly $10 trip to Henry’s for “luxuries” like meat, wine, bread, etc) and we decided that we could, too. Partly, anyway. We’re going to attempt to cut our grocery bill by 50% in 2009, by growing vegetables in our backyard, buying from local farmers and gasp, going without some luxuries.
The idea of being so closely connected to the food we eat is exciting! I mean, who really wants to eat food that has traveled 1500 plus miles or been highly processed to allow it to sit on a shelf for years, before it makes it to your plate? Think of the freshness and flavor! Here is a great tool to find out “What’s fresh near you?”

Gardening has been around since the beginning of time. You are correct when you state there is nothing better than eating the very foods you grow yourself. My dad was a backyard farmer & we loved the new potatoes, beans, corn, etc in the summer & fall. I don’t know if he was totally organic, however, I venture to guess he was mighty close. Working in the dirt/soil gives me such pleasure & a calming of not only my mind but also my physical body.
Good luck to you & Drew.
