broccoli harvest follow up

chopping-broccoliSo we harvested the broccoli earlier this week. (Sorry, it’s not a great photo.) I almost made the very mistake I advised against – waiting too long. I kept thinking, “I’ll wait til it gets just a little bigger…” Well with the little heat wave we had courtesy of the Santa Anas, the broccoli stopped growing. If we had waited any longer – the florets might have flowered. Fortunately, they didn’t. The incredible crunch and burst of flavor from our fresh, organic broccoli is unlike anything you can get from the grocery store! We ate half a head immediately – raw, some dipped in hummus. We chopped up the rest for our weekly homemade Vegan Veggie Pizza with a whole wheat crust. Regretfully, the aroma that filled the house made me so deliriously hungry – I completely forgot to take of picture of the masterpiece! Next week I’ll share the recipe and photos. If you don’t have time to make your own, call Pizza Fusion. They make a killer veggie pizza, too.

I can’t say enough about the flavor of vegetables that have just been harvested, minutes earlier (not weeks prior, as is the case with veggies from your grocery). I’m currently reading The Grapes of Wrath (I’m always reading – this year I committed to reading at least 4 classics) and I found this line to be particularly poignant, “(…) No man had touched the seed, or lusted for the growth. Men ate what they had not raised, had no connection with the bread.” Leave it to Steinbeck. The satisfaction of caring for your food, watching it grow, appreciating the effort required by not only the grower, but the plant itself – it creates a true connection to what we eat. So start planning your summer garden now. ;)
