Cloth napkins add sophistication and sustainability to even the simplest meal. Unfortunately, many of us (Drew and me included) have a terrible habit of using paper napkins or towels with everyday meals – saving cloth napkins for special occasions.  Although we buy recycled paper towels, we’re still creating unnecessary waste. (Read more about the best recycled paper goods at the NRDC’s website.) I am ready to kick the addiction and make the sustainable choice! All these options will dress up your table and save some trees in the process. (Click on the image to purchase.) Here are a few tips for selecting cloth napkins for everyday use:

  • Have fun with colors and patterns. Save white linen for formal affairs
  • Select a material that is machine washable. Cotton is good, organic cotton is better
  • Don’t fuss. Toss them in the wash with everything else and forget ironing, just fold them once they’re dry
  • Designate a color or pattern for each family member, so you can use the napkin throughout the day
  • Stock up when find an affordable set you like

great piece on sustainable cloth napkins. i’m definitely a cloth convert too when it comes to napkins, cleaning towels, etc. my sister describes how she takes it a step further, in a how to that she wrote for super eco, and uses a variety of colorful hankies that she collects from local flea markets. cheers …

Very cool post. I make my own napkins with leftover fabric – each one’s unique!
