
I just realized that’s been a while since I shared photos of our strawberry plants. There are a number of little white flowers and small green berries! I thought we would have to wait until summer before we saw any fruit. The seedlings we planted are Sequoias, which is a “June-bearing” variety (along with Douglas and Chandler, that does particularly well in San Diego). However, I just read at Peaceful Valley (a great online store for organic garden supplies, seeds and bare root stock) that Sequoia’s can yield their single, large crop as early as March in Southern California and Florida. So exciting! Now we just have to create a cover (out of roe or chicken wire) to keep the birds from snatching up the berries once they start to ripen. For now Molly’s on guard…
